American Campus Communities CEO Bill Bayless Named by Globe St. Real Estate Forum as 2021 Best Boss

April 8, 2020 -- AUSTIN, Texas. American Campus Communities (NYSE: ACC) chief executive officer, Bill Bayless, has been named a 2021 Best Boss in commercial real estate by Globe St. Real Estate Forum. Selections were based on individuals’ business acumen, how well they treat their employees, and the type of culture and environment they set at their firms.

Bayless’ experience in the student housing industry began during his days as a student at West Virginia University. He worked as a dishwasher, grill cook, night desk attendant, and as a resident assistant at Summit Hall where he noticed students and parents were being under-served as customers. Bill understood they were worthy of better products and services. His vision became to find a way to create modern, high quality, affordable student communities with  environments conducive to academic success and personal wellbeing.

For over 25 years, Bill has pioneered the modernization of the student housing industry with over $16.4 billion in transactions since the company’s inception. As American Campus Communities reaches over 140,000 college students across the country, Bayless continues to cultivate a work culture focused on developing people, serving others and building a sense of team spirit.

“I am truly honored to be recognized and realize I would not be able to do what I love everyday without the support, hardwork and inspiration from my leadership team and employees,” said Bayless. “I’ve always believed people are our strength and that our student residents come first and I am humbled that my colleagues advocated for me to receive this recognition.”

Under Bill’s leadership, executive vice president and chief operating officer at ACC, Jennifer Beese has managed company operations of 3,000 employees, developed new and existing talent through the Inside Track employee program and created a unique residence life program.

“ACC is more than just a place to live, it’s a home away from home for students and Bill has prioritized building a sense of community across our properties for students and employees,” Beese said. “He leads with a deep connection to the human experience whether from a student, a parent, an employee or a business partner perspective.  Bill has created a company culture that promotes team spirit and has provided a solid foundation for women, like myself, to excel not only in leadership but also within the real estate industry.”

Vice President of Projects at American Campus Communities, Wayne Taylor first met Bayless in 1992 when he was working for another developer and Bayless hired him for a maintenance position. Bayless taught Taylor how to “turn” properties and make them ready for move-in when students started the academic year.

“Bill is a mentor, a friend and a leader who sees the ability in others and invests in their success,” said Wayne. “He has proven to be a true visionary who always keeps to the values of ‘doing the right thing’ and inspires us to put people first in all situations.”

ACC is a Great Place to Work-CertifiedTM company, based on employee feedback on the Trust Index™ Survey administered by Great Place to Work, a global authority on workplace culture, employee experience and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue and increased innovation.

A total of 57 leaders were chosen to receive the 2021 Best Bosses recognition, all sharing similar qualities of ambition, financial prowess, and people skills, according to Globe St. The publication also says that these leaders are one-in-a-million professionals who lead by example as inspirational, innovative executives. They are not only profoundly accomplished within their field, but they serve as a boon for their organizations and the people within it.
