Bayless is the co-founder and chief executive officer of American Campus Communities, the nation’s largest developer, owner, and manager of high-quality student housing in the United States. Today, more than 125,000 students call an American Campus community “home” at more than 90 collegiate markets across America. Since its inception in 1993, the company has developed more than $4.2 billion of modern student housing for its own account and its university clients, has acquired in excess of $5 billion in student assets and currently has a total enterprise value of approximately $7 billion.
“Perhaps the best thing about the B&E Roll of Distinguished Alumni is that we get to recognize a new group of people who are simply outstanding in their respective fields,” said B&E Interim Dean Nancy McIntyre in a WVU press release. “This year’s inductees are superstars, and it’s so gratifying to see B&E graduates who have risen to be among the best of the best.”
Bayless first forged his vision of what would someday become American Campus Communities while he was still a student at West Virginia University from 1982 – 1986 graduating from The College of Business and Economics with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Bayless and American Campus led the student housing industry to a new plateau in 2004 when ACC became the nation’s first publicly traded student housing company. In 2011 the company was rated investment grade by both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. In 2013 the company received national accolades when it was named “One of America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies” by Forbes and was simultaneously honored as the “Development Firm of the Year” by the National Association of Home Builders. American Campus has also been named one of the “Best Companies to Work for in Texas” on three separate occasions.
“West Virginia University is more to me than just my alma mater,” said Bayless. “My experience at WVU truly provided the foundation for the vision of what would someday become American Campus Communities. I could not be more proud to be inducted into a group of such outstanding Mountaineers that are having a profound impact on the business world and beyond.”
The 2015 Roll of Distinguished Alumni Inductees also includes Marc Chini, Executive Vice President and Human Resources Leader of Synchrony Financial, Andrew D. Peters, Chief Safety Officer for AECOM, and Penelope Roll, an Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ares Management L.P.’s. This year’s inductees are the fifth class to be inducted following the 2011 initiation of the Roll of Distinguished Alumni.
