Director of Technical Accounting | Austin, Texas

The Director of Technical Accounting will serve as a technical accounting subject matter expert with respect to the company’s accounting policies. This position will have responsibility to manage the processes and internal controls associated with the identification, documentation, communication and implementation of proposed and new accounting standards, and the accounting for both routine and complex transactions. The position reports to the EVP, Chief Accounting Officer. 

Certificates and Licenses:  CPA (Certified Public Accountant) required

Critical Duties: 

  • Conduct technical accounting research and prepare technical accounting memos to document specific Company accounting positions related to transactions.
  • Monitor, analyze, and implement standard setter activity and new accounting pronouncements.
  • Review contracts and brief management on accounting implications.
  • Brief executive management on new accounting pronouncements and the anticipated effect on the company’s financial statements.
  • Implement new or modify existing policies and procedures to make the financial reporting / accounting process more effective, streamlined and efficient, and to conform to new accounting guidance.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform research on accounting, financial reporting and industry matters.
  • Work effectively with external auditors to document and explain accounting positions.
  • Work closely with SVP, Property Controller and VP, Corporate Controller to identify and prioritize policy development and accounting research needs.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reporting disclosures for completed transactions and new accounting pronouncements. 
  • Serve as a centralized accounting contact for contract review and work with other departments and accounting management to anticipate accounting implications.
  • Prepare initial detailed schedules and calculations as needed, and effectively transition ongoing accounting to other groups within the accounting department.
  • Work closely with internal audit to develop and document internal controls over new accounting processes.
  • Provide training on technical accounting issues to other departments and accounting staff.
  • Play a lead role in special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Public accounting experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum 5+ years related professional experience required.
  • Public accounting experience required.
  • Experience with GAAP research and writing technical accounting memos required.
  • Real Estate experience a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP.
  • Microsoft Office applications, especially strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
